I went to the Delaware State Fair show last night. But I’m going to lay this post out a little differently. *winks*
IN THE BEGINNING…
Two days ago I was sure that I wouldn’t make it to the DE concert due to lack of transportation. My friend Anna and I were really upset because this would be our last concert before we head our separate ways to college and his concerts are great fixes for whatever problem you have. Luckily our friend Genevieve (the true hero of the story) saved us both and drove us over 100 miles to the state fair. It worked out perfectly because we bought her a ticket and snuck her up to our section. The people in our row were highly amused by us and made space for her even though she was technically supposed to be 16 rows back.
We spent a couple hours in the fair section…talking with people, getting something to eat, watching people get sick on rides (bwaah) and then headed over to the grandstand building to see if we could get in. Of course it was blocked off. It always is, but we managed to sneak into the place to view Gavin, Brian, Whynot & Rodney’s sound check. These are fun, usually just as entertaining as the concerts themselves. Anyway, they were practicing “We belong together”, one of Gavin’s unreleased songs (my personal favorite) and we had the delight of listening to them practice this for about 20 to 25 minutes. This would be the sound check:

Time went on and we decided to go do a few more things at the fair before heading in to our concert seats. Just a word of warning. Strawberry milkshakes and spinning rides aren’t the greatest combination! We saw a mini parade with some corps or such. They were marching and my friends and I went to a military high school, and ended up marching on step and not even realizing it. It was very amusing, I felt like I had to salute someone! There was also this really funny inflatable guy..

RIGHT, so the actual concert. We went inside and went to our seats and sat down for a while. Where we were, we could look right over to our right and see the buses about 70 yards away. There was a jersey barrier between the fans and the open field where the bus was next to the stage. Many fans lined the walls in hope of catching a glimpse of Hoobastank and/or Gavin. This was amusing, I fiddled with my camera while I watched fans scream at techies who they thought were band members..very funny stuff. Then we spotted Gavin outside talking with some backstage-passers & other people. We had made up a sign for him so we decided this would be the best time for him to get a clear shot of what it said. So we walk up to the wall with our neon pink (only color we had) sign and hold it up and just start talking with each other. Gavin definetley saw it. He stood near his bus greeting people..occasionally glancing at it. After about 10 minutes of him trying to read it we found it had a glare on it so we tilted it. He walked just a little closer and read it. He BURST OUT LAUGHING. It was soo loud haha. And shouted over to us “I LOVE IT!” He kept grabbing the security guy and pointing to the three of us trying to get us over so that we could see him, but he couldn’t. S’ok though because we amused him and all was well in the world. Just in case you’re wondering the sign said
“GAVIN, CAN WE FLUFF YOUR HAIR” –something a bit g-rated and clever..it was a family event ya know!
Concert starts and we head back to our designated spots…they do a terrific job with the opening songs as usual! We had another neon pink sign with us haha. This one was just for Brian because he one of our favorite guitarists of all time. His amazing talent inspired us to great the “BRIAN IS F’ING HOT!!” sign. We were closest to Whynot so on the big screen I looked over just in time to see Whynot go over and shout past Gavin to Brian to look over at our sign. He had the sweetest shyest smile!! Whynot just starting laughing and Rodney accidently forgot he was supposed to start off the song and started clapping and laughing and pointing at us. Much fun!! Gavin looked over during the middle of one of his songs and had to turn around because he was about to laugh hysterically again.
We walked up to the jersey barrier and started rocking out front stage near Whynot and Rodney. We seemed to be the only people in our section who actually knew the names of anyone besides Gavin, and with the power of three it’s easier to shout up to them. Whynot and Rodney kept smiling at us anytime we would play our air drums and air bass. Haha, even Brian would come around the bend and spot us..we think he liked our sign a little bit. Hooray!
Here are some concert clips, some are blurry because holding your ground in a moving audience isn’t as easy as it seems..sorry!

(Meet Gavin’s bike. I’m pretty sure it’s his counting on he enjoyed riding it in circles around his bus!)

(That’s Gav on the jersey wall. He’s a very brave soul, he traveled fifty feet out into unsecured crowd singing during Chemical Party. Haha, the security guys couldn’t stop him!)
After the show they started to leave back for their bus and even though one of the Fair Announcers said that Rodney wouldn’t be throwing his drum sticks out into the crowd because he wouldn’t want to hurt someone, he walked up to the edge of the stage, called to the three of us and tossed it! He did a little happy dance when Genevieve caught it!

We headed back towards the buses because we were really amused by this point and Gavin saw us. He kept pointing towards us and talking with the security guards and told us he’d be out in 5 minutes. When he came back off his bus he left in his little golf cart to go sign things for people and kept pointing at us to get our attention. So we went to go find Brian, Whynot and Rodney! Everyone had gone by now to go see Hoobastank so Whynot, Brian and Rodney ventured away from their protective little bus to come see us, we were the only ones around there. They soon found out that fangirls, like tornados, can appear out of nowhere and were mobbed. It was actually really funny. We waiting a while but then went over to Brian when he got a free minute. He’s really great to talk to, such a nice fella, told us about upcoming vacation and that he’d get to see Joey soon and we just talked for some time. Then he lit up when he understood that we were giving him the sign. It was really cool to see Brian act a bit hyper haha! Rodney found us and I slipped him a note, we wanted to see if they wanted some food from the fair (they had some good shit out there! Great fair food mmmm) whynot was swamped in fangirls though and unfortunately Anna was the only one who could get to him after leaping over a security guard. Whynot said she was really lucky and told security that she was with him. After the fans left, Brian and Whynot said they had to go back to the bus and pack but Rodney stayed and talked with us for a while. He was great, he said he was really happy that we got the drum stick and that we were really amusing from the stage. He is uber-excited about vacation because his activities include seeing his favorite people in the world. We were joking about how Joey would be all annoyed when he would be bunking in Rodney’s bed and seeing pictures of his son and girlfriend everywhere haha. Unfort. We couldn’t buy him a steak because they were hitting the road early so they could get back home to NY (plus Rodney ate like a pig before hand). A couple of famous Rodney hugs later we said our goodbyes and he made his way back to the bus.

We decided we were too excited to leave just yet and stayed and rocked out on the Jersey wall listening to Hoobastank. Gen is a GREAT head banger by the way. A couple hours later, after everyone had been thrown out of the area, the concert was over and 99% of the fangirls had left we decided to stick around the gates and watch the very nice forklifters (who we spent much time with) go back and forth loading sound system and light equipment. We still had the urge for a hair fluffing. Then Gavin finally came out of his bus and jogged his way up to the gates as I’m shouting at him “IT RUNS! RUN FASTER!!” heeheehee. He talked to a few other fans first but came over to us. This is how it went down yall:
Gavin: Hey! I’m Gavin *smiles*
Me: *laughs* No way! I just did not know that.
Anna: so, can we fluff you’re hair, for real?
Gav: No ma’am you may not, but you can touch it!
[Haha, someone’s a little anal about his hair, but s’ok, he still let us fluff a bit! Squeaky clean he was..]
Me: Can I ask you a question? What’s on your dog tags? I’m curious!
Gavin: [insert information here]
Me: The song you sang at sound check..was that a cover or one of yours? It was really beautiful, I like it a lot.
Anna: We belong together..
Gav: Yep, that’s my song! It’s gonna be on my next album, go buy it!
A bus honk later we bid our farewell’s and the end to a highly amusing concert experience took over. We had many random people on our way out ask us if we actually got to fluff his hair..apparently we become a bit known haha. Yay for temporary concert stars!
Sorry it’s so long. The details are more for me to remember later on because I have a really baad memory. Plus I type exactly what I’m thinking and apparently I think in paragraphs. Hope you enjoyed the photos!
